   This lens is awesome. Yes, it is more expensive than the 18-55mm and 55-200mm lens combined but it has to be because it's doing much more than both of those lenses for its focal range. The pictures are sharp. The lens is quick. People have complained about lens creep (when the camera is pointed down, the lens "creeps" and extends itself) but this does not happen to my lens.    Nikon 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S ED VR II Nikkor Telephoto Zoom Lens for Nikon DX-Format Digital SLR Cameras I got this lens with my first DSLR, a Nikon D50. The was way back when the lens retailed for "only" $750. I was moving up from my previous camera, a point and shoot Cannon "Digital Elph".    I bought this item as I had damaged the supplied kit lens for my Nikon D5000. The images are clearer, the focus is accurate and the versatility is amazing. I previously had the 18-85mm set-up. I take a lot of portrait shots for my work as a dermatologist - basically, 'before and after' photos. I find that I am taking better quality photos. I have no regrets about upgrading.
